چکیده

In three studies, we investigated to what extent a geometrical representation in a psychological space succeeds in predicting typicality in animal, natural food and artifact concepts and whether contrast categories contribute to the prediction. In Study 1, we compared the predictive value of a family resemblance-based prototype model with a geometrical centroid model in which similarity is defined in terms of distance to the centroid. The geometrical centroids outperformed family resemblance, with increasingly better predictions as the number of underlying dimensions increased. In Study 2, we investigated possible contrast effects by moving the reference point to an optimal prediction location. For most of the categories, the optimal typicality prediction was obtained by moving the prediction point away from the centroid in the opposite direction of the contrast categories, comparable to a caricature. This result strongly suggests that contrast categories play an important role in typicality. Finally, Study 3 showed that the contrast effects on typicality can be situated in the underlying similarity representation. 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Caricatures and Prototypes 1 Conceptual Interrelatedness and Caricatures

Concepts are interrelated to the extent that the characterization each concept is influenced by the other concepts, and isolated to the extent that the characterization of one concept is independent of other concepts. The relative categorization accuracy of the prototype and caricature of a concept can be used as a measure of concept interrelatedness. The prototype is the central tendency of a ...

A Prototype-Exemplars Hybrid Cognitive Model of “Phenomenon of Typicality” in Categorization: A Case Study in Biological Classification

In this paper we introduce a new machine learning system developed to investigate the phenomenon of typicality in categorization processes of human mind. Experimental researches in cognitive psychology produced a lot of evidences that categorization is a process based on similarity between observed instances and representative instances, which constitutes the concept acquired by human mind. Con...

Similarity, typicality and fuzzy prototypes for numerical data

In this paper, we consider the notions of similarity, typicality and prototype for numerical data, i.e. vectorial data belonging to R. We study the relationships between these notions and examine various possibilities to define similarity, to deduce typicality from similarity and prototypes from typicality, underlining the semantics and the interpretation of each considered method.

Fuzzy Prototypes: From a Cognitive View to a Machine Learning Principle

Cognitive psychology works have shown that the cognitive representation of categories is based on a typicality notion: all objects of a category do not have the same representativeness, some are more characteristic or more typical than others, and better exemplify their category. Categories are then defined in terms of prototypes, i.e. in terms of their most typical elements. Furthermore, these...
